Senecio rowleyanus 'String of Pearls' Variegated is a cultivated form of the species Senecio rowleyanus, native to arid regions of South Africa. In the wild, it grows along the ground or trails over rocky ledges, rooting at nodes when conditions allow. It produces long, slender stems lined with spherical, bead-like leaves that store water. This variegated form shows green, cream, and sometimes pale yellow tones due to reduced chlorophyll in parts of the leaves.
Stems can grow over a metre long, with leaves spaced to maximise sunlight exposure while reducing water loss. Each leaf has a small translucent window that lets light reach deeper tissues, aiding photosynthesis. Variegated plants often grow more slowly than green forms, as non-green areas produce less energy.
Flowering occurs when mature, often in cooler months with good light and a short dry period. The small, brush-like blooms are white with red stamens and have a light cinnamon scent. In cultivation, blooms are more likely when seasonal conditions mimic those of its native range.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; some morning sun is fine. Low light can cause sparse, stretched growth.
- Water: Water well, then let the soil dry completely. Reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Low to moderate; ensure airflow to avoid rot.
- Media: Use a free-draining cactus or succulent mix with sand or perlite.
- Temperature: Keep between 18–26°C; protect from frost.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with diluted succulent fertiliser.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years in fresh mix; handle gently to prevent stem breakage.
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
